How easy is it to get a court order to search an IP address and find its location?

What kind of crime needs to happen for a judge to give the go ahead on locating an exact location of an IP address? An obscene comment was written on my Myspace and a death threat was left on my car.|||im not sure on that, but if you have the ip address, go to ip2location.com

|||The death threat left on your car should be enough, if you can somehow connect it to the MySpace user. The first step to take is to contact your local police and file a report and talk to them, as laws will vary depending upon your location.|||with know how you need no ct. order, any IP address can be traced to exact location, that is the small stuff, if you go before a judge they most likely will make appear as a fool, for wanting to tap into others.!!! that is unless u have very substancial reason, and there are privacy acts that prevents anyone from being traced, you just need to know the rite people!|||Regarding what other people are saying about IP locating services such as Geobytes: they are frequently inaccurate or very misleading depending on which ISP the person was using. You can ask a Myspace Admin for the IP address that left the comment|||If someone is stalking you, you can file a stalking order at the courthouse. It will be a judge's order and they will be served with papers to answer before a judge in regards to the accusations.





I'm sure that with a 'death threat' involved, it should carry more weight.





As far as the IP search, that shouldn't be hard after you file the papers, explaining that you do have the IP of the person suspected of making the threat.





I might consider hiring a Private Investigator, sometimes they can find out more for you...

it will ONLY work if you have the IP address. If you don't you can't find it out on myspace.
